Plays to Love Jordan Scarlett Jersey , Plays to Hate looks at the most significant plays in swinging momentum and impacting the eventual outcome of the game. There is always plenty to hate about NFL officiating, so we usually only focus on the plays on the field, but this time I’m including a “bonus Play to Hate” about a terrible call by the officials. Let’s review how the Carolina Panthers lost a heart breaker of a game with their 24-16 road loss against the Green Bay Packers. Three plays to love2nd Quarter 0:02 – Panthers 10, Packers 14. Packers ball 1st-and-goal at CAR 1The Situation: The Packers had the ball at the Carolina one yard line with two seconds left in the first half. They decided to go for the touchdown instead of kicking a field goal. The Play: Gerald McCoy exploded through the line and absolutely drilled Jamaal Williams the moment the Packers running back took the handoff. Vernon Butler got there just a fraction of a second later. The duo dropped Williams three yards behind the line of scrimmage and prevented a touchdown.4th Quarter 15:00 – Panthers 10, Packers 24. Panthers ball 3rd-and-9 at CAR 33The Situation: Green Bay had just kicked a field goal to go up by 14. With the fourth quarter just getting started, the Panthers offense faced a crucial 3rd-and-9.The Play: Greg Olsen ran a dig route past the first down sticks while Kyle Allen hung in the pocket as his protection collapsed. Allen delivered a pretty pass over the middle and took a big hit. Olsen secured the pass and gained 15 yards https://www.carolinapanthersfanshop.com/Christian-Miller-Jersey , extending a drive that resulted in a touchdown (but a failed two-point conversion) to trim the Packers lead to 24-16.4th Quarter 9:34 – Panthers 10, Packers 24. Packers ball 3rd-and-9 at CAR 49The Situation: The Packers now led 24-16 in the fourth quarter and faced 3rd-and-9. Carolina’s defense needed a huge stop. The Play: Aaron Rodgers took a snap in shotgun formation, felt pressure, rolled right, and surveyed the scene. Rodgers wound up and launched a bomb to the end zone to Allen Lazard. Donte Jackson stuck to Lazard like a glove and batted down the pass. I timed how long Jackson was in coverage. From the time of the snap until the time he broke up the pass Donte covered Lazard for 9.01 seconds, which is an eternity. Well done by Action Jackson.Three plays to hate (plus one bonus)2nd Quarter 12:46 – Panthers 10 Will Grier Jersey , Packers 7. Panthers ball 2nd-and-2 at GB 46The Situation: The Panthers had momentum in the second quarter and were looking to build on their 10-7 lead. Kyle Allen had just led Carolina’s offense past the 50 yard line. The Play: A bad center-quarterback exchange led to a fumble on the snap which was recovered by the Packers. It’s wasn’t clear if center Matt Paradis left the snap a little short or if Allen pulled his hands too quickly. Green Bay’s offense got the ball with decent field position and went on to score a touchdown for a 14-10 lead. 2nd Quarter 4:21 – Panthers 10, Packers 14. Packers ball 3rd-and-13 at GB 7The Situation: (Note: I normally don’t moan about bad calls in this column, so consider this an officiating-related “bonus play to hate.”) Carolina’s defense had pinned the Packers near their own goal line facing 3rd-and-13. If the Panthers could force a punt and come up with a decent punt return, Carolina’s offense would take possession around midfield. The Play: Aaron Rodgers dropped into the end zone to pass. Gerald McCoy got to Rodgers just as he released the pass. McCoy did everything the NFL has preached by rolling to the side to not land his body weight on the Packers quarterback, but referee Jerome Boger still flagged McCoy for roughing the passer. While Green Bay didn’t score on this possession (they got stuffed at the one yard line), the Panthers offense was denied a legitimate opportunity to score before the half. 3rd Quarter 13:48 – Panthers 10 https://www.carolinapanthersfanshop.com/Greg-Little-Jersey , Packers 14. Packers ball 2nd-and-26 at GB 9The Situation: Green Bay got the ball to start the third quarter. After a Vernon Butler sack and an offensive penalty, the Packers now faced 2nd-and-26 from their own nine yard line. The Play: Aaron Rodgers dropped back to pass from the end zone. Davante Adams ran a double move and smoked Donte Jackson. Adams got wide open for a 38-yard gain near midfield. Three plays later the Packers scored a touchdown to take a commanding 21-10 lead.3rd Quarter 7:17 – Panthers 10, Packers 21. Panthers ball 2nd-and-10 at GB 11The Situation: The Panthers fell down by 11 points in the third quarter and needed to score. Kyle Allen and Christian McCaffrey conducted a solid drive down to the Green Bay 11 yard line. Caroline needed a touchdown. The Play: Kyle Allen tried to force a pass on the run to Jarius Wright in the end zone. Adrian Amos undercut the route and tipped the ball. Tramon Williams made a diving interception and Carolina left critically important points on the field.Closing it out and summing it upYes, it’s easy to point to the final play of the game when Christian McCaffrey got stopped at the two yard line as the reason the Panthers lost, but doing so isn’t thinking critically enough. There were so many other plays Carolina could’ve made to not lose this game. On offense, Kyle Allen (28-of-43 Brian Burns Jersey , 307 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception) was impressive under the circumstances (in Lambeau, in the snow) and despite shoddy pass protection the entire second half. His pocket awareness was light years ahead of where it was earlier this season and he escaped multiple sacks. In the two-minute drill he made clutch passes on 3rd-and-5 to Greg Olsen and 4th-and-10 to DJ Moore. Both Moore (120 receiving yard) and Christian McCaffrey (141 total yards) were fantastic. Taylor Moton was a mess at left tackle after Dennis Daley went down with an injury. Carolina’s defense was awful. Look, I love Luke Kuechly, but if he’s “the quarterback of the defense” then he deserves a lot of criticism. Luke made just one solo tackle (four total) Ryan Kalil Color Rush Jersey , he couldn’t get off blocks, and he gave up a 48-yard reception to Jimmy Graham in a botched zone coverage. The Panthers run defense was abysmal allowing Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams to combine for 156 yards on 26 carries (six yards per carry). Donte Jackson was flagged for two pass interference penalties and a defensive holding and Ross Cockrell struggled as well. On the positive side, it’s great to see Vernon Bulter making an impact. Outside of a Joey Slye 50-yard field goal the special teams left much to be desired. DeAndrew White muffed a kick return. Why can’t the Panthers ever find an average kick/punt returner, let alone a good one? Carolina’s special teams also gifted the Packers a field goal. Mason Crosby missed a 52-yard attempt but the Panthers defense was flagged for illegal formation, then Crosby drilled the follow-up 47-yarder. As I’ve said before, the recipe for the Panthers to win without Cam Newton is for Kyle Allen’s offense to be “good enough” while the defense needs to be stout. The offense did it’s part against the Packers. The defense didn’t. Carolina’s season is now teetering on the brink at 5-4 with a huge divisional game against the Atlanta Falcons looming. Rookie return specialist Greg Dortch has been promoted from the Carolina Panthers practice squad to their regular roster. They have waived Donte Moncrief in a corresponding roster move.Dortch is the only reliable punt returner the Panthers have fielded this season Luke Kuechly Color Rush Jersey , even though he only saw action in one game. Hopefully he will provide some stability on special teams while the rest of the team deals with staff shakeups in the wake of Ron Rivera’s departure and secondary coach Perry Fewell’s ascendance to the interim head coach position.Moncrief, meanwhile, saw limited game action in his few weeks with the Panthers and did not record a single reception. He was a 2014 third round pick of the Indianapolis Colts where his early career with Andrew Luck lead to some now unrealized hype. He has since spent time with four different NFL teams, including the Panthers, without making much of an impact.
